Love, Time, Patience

Love, Time, Patience

When I was on vacation I received this fortune of sorts with my dinner, immediately I thought of how perfectly this ties into counseling. Making the decision to begin counseling can be an overwhelming and scary time for many people. We would all like to reach our goals and solve our issues with the wave of a hand but unfortunately it is not that easy. Attending counseling on a weekly basis and taking an honest look at your pain, struggles, and past is no small feat. Many clients are critical of themselves for not "being ok" or not reaching their goals as quickly as they would like. This fortune addresses the difficulties that many face when engaging in counseling. Reaching your goals and working through personal struggles takes time, there is no fast track, no quick fix; to truly resolve challenging issues you must invest the needed time.

Patience and time fall into a similar category in the counseling world. There is a reason patience is regarded as a virtue and being patient with yourself is essential when in counseling. Patience with yourself when examining the reasons that brought you to counseling in the first place is difficult to manage. In counseling being patient means accepting where you are on your path to a healthy life, and sustaining that patience to reach your goals. The last and maybe most important portion of this fortune addresses love. All of us have someone or something in our lives that we love, but do we love ourselves? Being able to love yourself regardless of perceived short comings is imperative to having fulfillment. If you can learn to love yourself even at your lowest point, you can learn to pick yourself back up, remain patient, and invest the time needed to work through your struggles. Love, time, and patience are all part of the healing process; people do not always come into counseling with these strengths but they can all be gained and used to your benefit if you can manage to commit to addressing the struggles that first led you to seek counseling.
